Markets

Florence markets are well known spots where tradition meets quality in a frenzy atmosphere, appealing to everyone including the frequent visitors.

Mercato Centrale, or Central Market, this is the most hectic of all Florentine markets, loud and alive, here real trade, mostly of fresh products, goes on every day. The best location to buy all the season’s fresh products, from truffles, cheeses, bread, Olive Oil, meat and fish; all stands are logically placed and separated in sections by products.

Mercato Nuovo, or Porcelino market, between via Calimala and via Porta Rossa, is beautifully arranged inside the “Loggia”. Once trading place for precious silks and precious metals from the 1800’s, today the trade is mostly leather products and souvenirs.

San Lorenzo Market, an everyday market (but Mondays) selling exclusively leather products of all kind is situated on the famous square of San Lorenzo.

Flee Market, better known as Mercato dei Ciompi, is located in this same square, it sells anything from antiques to the most unusual items and bric-a-brac, still today it preserves it’s very regional scent.

Essences, pomades, spirits, balms, waters,liqueurs and other preparations of the Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Adiacent to piazza di santa maria novella is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, established by the dominican fathers shortly after 1221. Many of the officina’s preparations have made history and have marked an epoch: the essences, as well as the famous and much requested perfumes, are still prepared to a large extent following the formulas studied in 1500 the 'acqua di rose', rose water, an excellent refreshing tonic for red eyes, was already available for sale in the second half of the fourteenth century. Other favourites include the perfumed powders produced from the ground rhizome of the iris, the flower that grows freely on the hills around florence in such profusion as to be adopted as the lily symbol of the city, still represented in its coat of arms. Production is limited and is meticulously controlled.
